Project Description

Tidal Technology Center

When completed in 2019, Tidal Technology Center Grevelingendam (TTC-GD) will provide owners of new tidal energy technologies with the means to test, certify, validate and demonstrate their products in a fully operational tidal context. It will also provide a demonstration setup of turbines capable of producing 0.5 – 1 MW of electricity.

TTC-GD aims to be the most cost effective international location to test, certify, validate and demonstrate tidal energy converters – technology that generates electricity by harnessing the power of tidal streams and rivers. Beyond technology demonstration, testing and verification, TTC-GD will provide a wide range of consultancy and research services, and lead the development of international standards for hydropower. TTC-GD will also forge alliances with other countries, exporting its knowledge around the world to stimulate the development of a global hydropower industry. TTC-GD is located at the ‘Flakkeese Spuisluis’, part of the Delta Works in Zeeland, the Netherlands.

3 test channels of 3-10.5 metres wide, with a depth of 5.75 metres

Monitor and data log systems
Verification and validation

Turbines of 0.5-1.0 MW each

2.5 MW, 2,000 households

TTC-GD will include facilities for research, monitoring and data logging. We are working with various certification and standardisation institutions to become a fully equipped certification centre.

TTC-GD is connected to the existing “Flakkeese Spuisluis”. The drainage sluice was completely renovated by Rijkswaterstaat in 2018, after which TTC-GD started construction. The construction of the TTC-GD in the Grevelingendam was resumed after the winter break with steel work and the pouring of concrete. This construction phase is expected to be completed around October 1, 2019.

The market for hydropower solutions in rivers and oceans is developing rapidly. There is a worldwide demand for locations where suppliers of hydropower technologies can test, demonstrate and certify their innovative products in a realistic seawater environment, preferably with tides. The Grevelingen dam containing the Flakkeese Spuisluis is part of the Delta Works, the Dutch flood barrier. It is an ideal place for a center for hydropower innovation: the Tidal Technology Center Grevelingendam. BT Projects is working hard to have this innovative infrastructure operational in 2019, thereby helping to create a platform for the development of the hydropower sector.

Research platform

TTC-GD will feature three test channels, varying in width. This allows turbines, mills or components thereof to be tested, certified and demonstrated in an appropriate channel. The setup is also ideal for monitoring the impact of hydropower facilities on morphology, on tidal flow patterns, environmental impact and a host of other variables. TTC-GD will also make demonstration turbines available for eductaional and research purposes.

Showcasing platform

Being readily accessible from land, TTC-GD will provide easy and cost-effective access to both the facility and the installed turbines. As an ‘on-shore’ facility, it will eliminate the requirement for high-cost offshore installation and the associated operational, vessel and other costs. As a result, costs are saved and development delays are avoided. It is therefore the perfect and manageable solution for the development phase between small-scale tank tests and large-scale offshore demonstrators and arrays.

Storage systems for on-demand electricity: ‘Energy on demand’

In a second phase, TTC-GD will be equipped tchnologies to demonstrate the potential of power storage systems for stable and reliable on-demand output strategies (dubbed as ‘Energy on Demand’). Technologies will include water-buffering, flywheel technologies and battery systems, plus we will work with Power2Gas systems in the region. Also highly innovative Photo Voltaic stacks that can be retrofitted on existing solar panels and increase output by 20% will be demonstrated.
